    Questions

How is this different from a code diff?

Code diffs mark whole lines. Ordinary text is often one long paragraph, so this compares word by word, and joins changes that sit next to each other into one.

    Which algorithm does it use?

Eugene Myers' difference algorithm from 1986, the one git uses by default. It finds the fewest words to cut and add. When the two texts differ too much, it compares sentence by sentence so the page stays fast, and says so.

How is the percentage worked out?

Words cut plus words added, divided by the words in both versions. Identical texts are 0%, completely different ones 100%. Punctuation and spaces don't count as words.

    What does ignoring tashkeel do?

It treats مرحبا and مرحبًا as the same word: Arabic vowel marks and the tatweel stretch (ـ) are left out of the comparison. The text is still shown exactly as written.

What does Copy as text give me?

The format of git diff --word-diff: cuts as [-this-] and additions as {+this+}, so the changes still read when you paste them into a chat or an email.

    Is my text uploaded?

No. Both texts are compared in this browser tab and are not saved or sent anywhere.

Do you track the texts I compare?

No. Both texts are compared inside this browser tab, and they aren't saved or sent anywhere.
